Instead of a third post in this series, I ended up writing an essay entitled “1. Moral Foundations” that lays out my thoughts on this. It doesn’t stray much into analysis, but my plans for it are to be a pointy stick with which to poke capitalism (and other ideas) in the ribs, those analyses coming in future essays. I will reprint the preface to the Foundations series here:
In the following works I’m developing a set of tools with which to dissect systems and processes of change. Like Galileo’s telescope or Newton’s calculus, we may turn this tool toward the observation and analysis of concrete problems found in the world. Since I am no Galileo or Newton, I may have produced nothing more elegant than a pointy stick or threatening banana, which I will nevertheless wield to the best of my ability, and which I will continue to hone through testing against reality. Over time and use, I hope to refine these “foundations” into an elegant arsenal of instruments indeed.
